The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, has said that military operations, though part of the national effort, are only a means to an end.
He made these remarks during his visit to forward posts in Swat. He appreciated the support of the people of Swat which helped the Army to restore normalcy in the area, says an ISPR statement issued here on Wednesday.
While speaking to the notables of the area, the COAS stressed the need for them to take control and contribute to the peace and welfare of the people. He said that miscreants from most parts of Swat had been flushed out and normalcy restored.
He appreciated the role of the security forces in successful completion of their task in Swat. “With these enabling environments in place, it is important that political and administrative elements now take the lead to restore business as usual.”
He also announced that the Army would now get involved in providing fast-track relief to the people of Swat, which would address their basic needs. These efforts would involve expenditure of Rs 1 billion in the next three to five months.
