Jammu, March 16 – The First Lady, Mrs. Usha Vohra has said that neglecting women power indicates waste of human resource and that change in the mindset of society vis-à-vis women is required to transform the status of women. She said that for poverty alleviation, gender equality and empowerment is an effective weapon.
Mrs. Vohra said this here today while inaugurating a three-day inter-disciplinary workshop on “Women and Development: Canada and India”, held at Business School Seminar Hall of the University of Jammu. The programme was organized by the Centre for New Literatures, Cultural and Communication, Jammu University.
The First Lady said a number of legislations have been enacted by the Government and their effective implementation can yield better results. Quoting various statistics reflecting gender inequality, she appreciated efforts like conducting of seminars as an effective step towards generating awareness about gender-related issues.
Mrs. Vohra emphasized the need for strengthening micro-credit system, effective information and educational strategies as also establishment of a National Mission on socio-economic status of women.
On this occasion, various eminent educationists expressed their views, including Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Varun Sahni who said that to understand the voice of women, it is important to understand their silence, adding that their muteness speaks volumes of their plight. He appreciated the efforts of the Centre in initiating measures in this direction by organizing such a broad-based workshop.
Prof. Kavita Sharma, Director, India International Centre, New Delhi, Prof. Chandra Mohan, Academic Advisor, Centre for New Literatures, Culture and Communication, Prof. Posh Charak, Director, Centre for New Literatures, Culture and Communication, JU, Ms. Prachi Koul Shastri from Indo-Canadian Institute, New Delhi, Prof. Darini Rajasingham, Research Fellow, National University of Singapore, who had come as a special invitee, were among other eminent educationists present on the occasion.Prof. Rajasingham also presented the keynote address on the occasion.
