General Nkunda Ready For ‘Peaceful’ Solution

Speaking to BBC, General Nkunda has said that he is ready for a political solution to the conflict under the condition that the DR Congo’s government must disarm the Hutu rebels from Rwanda first. He has claimed that the Rwandan Hutu rebels have been attacking ethnic Tutsis.

We said for a long time that the war cannot finish a political problem,” Nkunda said to Arnaud Zajtman of BBC. He added: “Political problems asked for political solutions.”

He has said that his forces are protecting the Tutsi population of DR Congo from the Rwandan Hutu rebels made up of both the Interhamwe militia and the former armed forces of Rwanda. Both have lived in the eastern part of Rwanda since the 1994 genocide.

General Nkunda says that it was too dangers for the displaced to go to government camps and explained that the Hutu rebels could easily get to those places.

General Nkunda says: “The problem is that on the government sites there are Hutu rebels who are armed and their ideology is to kill only Tutsi, so they cannot live on the sites of the government if the government is working with those negative forces.”
