The Dharwar rocks in which the state abounds are said to be virtually primeval in origin. These rock formations are identified with the ones that exploded from the very bowels of the earth nearly 2300 million years ago. This phenomenon resulted in oppressive heat and humidity which naturally affected the terrain and climate of the surrounding areas. Buted Experts maintain that, as a consequence, Nellore became rich in mica deposits, and Chittoor and Kuppam, in gold –bearing quartz formations. The birth of the Eastern Ghats is also attributed to the original Dharwar rock formations.
As millennium after millennium began to flit by, unconcerned about what had been going on in a very insignificant part of the universe, the Dharwar rocks became smaller and shorter, and under the impact of the storms and other cataclysmic natural phenomena found their way into the sea. Whatever was washed ashore remained as what are today known as the Cuddapah slabs, which dominate the bleak, wind -swept landscape of the drought –hit districts of Anantapur, Kurnool, cuddapah and Bellay: now in the state of Karnataka. These stones are said to be at least 500 millions years old. Cuddapah’s a abundant supplies of asbestos and steatite are the gift of capricious nature made when she was very, very young. Cuddapah and Kurnool are also rich in limestone, the basic raw material for the manufacture of cement.
