George Banks, a Pennsylvania man who killed 13 people in 1982, is too mentally ill to be executed a judge said today. The same judge ruled that Banks was unfit to be executed but reheard the case with new testimony due to a supreme court order.
George Banks killed 13 people, including five of his own children in Wilkes-Barre, PA in September, 1982. He used an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to shoot down his children, their mothers and other members of their families. He had four simultaneous girlfriends, all of whom bore him at least one child, who were among the first victims of his shooting spree. There were over 40 witnesses to his crimes and he was sentenced to death in a Pennsylvania court in June of 1983.
George Banks, now 66, will probably serve the rest of his life in prison instead of being executed. Prosecutors maintain that the execution should proceed but, after the second judge ruling against his execution, that possibility seems low.
