Former South Dakota Governor George McGovern has switched sides. Formerly a supporter of Senator Hillary Clinton’s run for the presidency, McGovern now backs Senator Barack Obama.
Barack Obama’s big win last night in North Carolina and strong performance in the Indiana primary results have infused his campaign with nearly unstoppable momentum. The NY Times said today that Clinton now faces her toughest days of the race.
McGovern, 85, has said that "by any practical test," Obama has won the nomination. Yet he does not regret his endorsement months ago, before the Iowa caususes, of Mrs. Clinton. He is a close friend of the Clintons and said, "I will hold them in affection and admiration all of my days," reports the Associated Press.
Speaking of Hillary Clinton, McGovern said, "she has run a valiant campaign. And she will remain an influential voice in the American future."
The South Dakota primarues are to be held June 3rd, with 15 delegates up for grabs. Clinton is scheduled to travel to South Dakota tomorrow.
