Ignorance? Incompetence? Unwillingness to look at the current state of affairs clearly?
These are harsh words, but how else can one describe short-sighted actions of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel? Look at the unpleasant results of the open doors policy she started in 2015. Let`s count: more than one million refugees in Germany; severe ethnic conflicts; deteriorating crime situation and increasing number of religious confrontations; mass disturbances and growing influence of the right-wing parties across Europe; Cologne incidents and terrorist attack in Berlin. And despite all that, the government still clings to this course. Chancellor keeps saying “Wir schaffen das” ignoring just how empty and idle it sounds today.
A report recently published by the Federal Ministry of Finance drily states how big the problem is: 21.7 bn euros were spent last year in order to deal with the migration crisis, and yet 21.3 bn are going to be spent this year. Like the Pied Piper of Hamelin Merkel led a huge crowd into the country, and now she’s been desperately trying to find a proper barn to sate it. But let’s face the facts. What are the odds that all these people will ever successfully integrate into the modern German society? And why would they do that anyway? Why bother learning a strange new language, getting qualified, changing their habits, fitting into a different community with its moral values and rules when you could just take generous benefits and live in clover. No wonder that immigrants’ cost item has turned into a massive black hole which consumes astronomical amounts of money and produces nothing in return.
But worst of all is not the refugee crisis itself, but what has followed it. Other European countries had to support Merkel`s policy, but since many of them weren`t as wealthy as Germany, alarming issues started to occur, like economy problems and increasing discontent among locals. For example in Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal young people had been facing high unemployment for quite some time, so they were forced to leave their homeland and look for jobs elsewhere just to support themselves and their families. Obviously, the wave of uneducated and unqualified refugees from the East has only made things worse and hasn’t earned Germany any points on the international arena.
It was the free passage through the borders for immigrants that paved the way for the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum. Eventually, it led to the fall of the pound and turned out to be a real threat to the British economy. Furthermore, Brexit received a vast response across all Europe, leading to greater anti-EU sentiments. Right-wing parties which were standing against mass immigration started gaining popularity in France, the Netherlands and Germany itself – a troubling sign on the eve of the forthcoming elections.
Thus, due to the series of the unreasoned and crude actions, Germany is now facing a growing threat of isolation within Europe. This time it`s not German aggression, but rather its hospitality that will make former allies turn their backs to Germany. Oh, the irony!
Merkel has opened Pandora`s box and she still refuses to accept her mistakes. She states that leaving refugees alone without proper endorsement could have lowered Germany`s ratings and brought the unnecessary problems to the country. But at the same time the Chancellor ignores the problems that have already crawled through her open doors. Germany has become a transit point for terrorists. Lawful citizens cannot walk the streets without fear now. Women and children have never been in more danger since the Wall fell. Holiday celebrations will never be the same – they have to be surrounded by police cordons recently.
New masters have come to this country ready to claim what had never belonged to them.
