The ex-gratia that members of the past government should take is still a hot issue in Ghana. This week the debate was taken to different levels when the Presisdent withdraws the nomination of one of his ministers who was supposed to be vetted by parliament. The nominee Honorable Moses Asaga is a member of the current parliament.
President did not give any reason for his decision in the letter to parliament, but investigations that have been confirmed in high goverment circles revealed that this nominee who has been a very strong member of the party and was part of a team that had interim oversight over the Ministry of Finance authorised the payment of the amounts without consulting neither his colleagues nor the president.
It was reported that some members of the ex-parliament of which the nominee was a part, have cashed their checques, but the Accontant General said no one was able to do that before the anomaly was detected and the payments witheld.
It is now clear that the current government is bent on reviewing downwards the package due to much protest from the citizenry.
Some people who were members of the former parliament are treathening to go to court over the issue because, to them it is unconstitutional for such packages to be reviewed downwards once they have been approved by parliament.
