While there is little support in Hollywood for conservative politicians, it has played well for both Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. So far, support from Tinseltown has gone a long way. One example would be martial arts actor Chuck Norris’ endorsement of US Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee.
Chuck Norris is most known for his role as Cordell Walker on “Walker, Texas Ranger.” He even made remarks about John McCain’s age and health.
However, Democratic candidates are far ahead of Republicans in terms of money coming from Hollywood. In the case of Republicans, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani are closely tied with each other in campaign contributions from the entertainment industry.
After the GOP debate on January 21, McCain will headline a fundraiser at the home of Harry Sloan who is the Chairman and CEO of MGM. So far, McCain has received donations from people such as Jerry Bruckheimer.
“McCain’s support in Hollywood goes back to the 2000 election, when he had so much backing from independents, and then in 2004, due to his friendship with John Kerry,” Sloan had explained.
Sloan adds: “Those two events gave him a positive image with the Hollywood community. If anything, he’s seen as ‘the tolerable Republican’ to a lot of the Democrats and liberals here. I seldom hear anybody say anything negative about John, even though they probably disagree with him on a majority of the issues.”
However, it would look as if Giuliani has more A-List power behind him.
Giuliani has received support from Adam Sandler, Kelsey Grammer, and Robert Duvall. John Voight, Dennis Miller, and Melissa Gilbert too have put their support behind Rudy Giuliani.
However, veterans in show business are unsure how politicians will really benefit from rubbing shoulders with the A-List.
“At the end of the day, none of us in the movie business means a thing,” according to a major movie producer who has been involved with politics for decades.
The producer adds: “If anybody in Hollywood thinks we’re really an important part of the process, they’re kidding themselves. We each have one vote, one conscience…and $4,600 we can each donate. That’s it.”
