Police forces avoided another flare up in Dooars, when they rescued Roshan Giri and Binay Tamang along with few others, who went to Ethelbari to attend the funeral of Akbar Lama, a Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) cadre who died in the communal flare up on 7th Feb’09 in Dooars.
The gist of a story as published in prominent Calcutta Bengali Dailies is like this: –
A delegation consisting of Morcha Secretary Roshan Giri and publicity secretary Binay Tamang along with three other members attended the funeral of their dead comrade Akbar Lama. There, Roshan Giri defiantly said that GJM is not ready to budge an inch from the demand of inclusion of Terai and Dooars in Gorkhaland.
The news spread to the nearby Chamurchi and when the delegation tried to enter Chamurch to see their distressed cadres in 7th February violence, the Adivasis and local people encircled them and started demonstrating against them. Their vehicles were ransacked and the delegation somehow managed to escape to a nearby forest slum.
The Adivasis and the common man of the area encircled them there also. They demanded that unless Roshan & Co. withdrew their demand of inclusion of Dooars in Gorkhaland, they would not allow them to return to the hills. The Adivasis had with them their traditional arms the bows, arrows and Tangis. The delegation remained stranded at the slum for 5 hours from 3.00PM. Later they were rescued by a large police force, which sent them back towards Gorubathan in DGHC area.
Elaborating the incident Rajesh Lakra, the secretary of Terai-Dooars branch of Adivasi Vikash Parishad said that in view of the surcharged atmosphere of the Dooars, Roshan Giri should not have come to Dooars. He said the common man have stopped them from entering Chamurchi. Otherwise too, the people of Dooars felled tree trunks and boulders on roads to stop the entry of Giri & Co. in the Dooars.
There was a flare up in Rahimpur tea garden near Binaguri on Sunday night (8th Feb’09) where Adivasis torched a few huts of Morcha supporters who also retaliated by torching the huts of Adivasis. Police somehow managed the situation from worsening.
Medha Patekar, while attending the Golden Jubilee function at Adarsha Vidya Mandir at Banarhat, tried to sell the idea of smaller states, which infuriated the local population and Medha had to retreat. Later she went to Islampur to attend a convention. There too, she tried to take out a procession, which was disallowed by the police.
Meanwhile the ‘Bengal and Save Bengali Language Committee’ has called for 24 hour North Bengal Bandh on Thursday the 12th Feb’09 to protest against the demand of Gorkhaland.
On the other hand, the Yuva Morcha Secretary of Darjeeling branch Alok Kanta Monithulung said that a cadre of 2000 youths would be raised and trained in karate as well as archery to support Gorkhaland movement. He also said that they would put their case on Internet to get support for the cause of Gorkhaland from international community.
