Global Sun Solutions: The biggest retail bookseller in the US has teamed up with Google to help challenge Amazon’s rise to dominance.
Global Sun Solutions says that US retail bookseller Barnes & Noble’s decision to team up with Google to win back book sales market share from e-commerce giant, Amazon, is fraught with pitfalls.
The China-based broker-dealer said that the tie up which sees a number of B&N’s bricks and mortar stores use the Google Shopping Express to offer same-day delivery to customers is unlikely to make any major impact upon Amazon’s near-complete domination of book sales given Google’s commitment to a number of retailers in exactly the same position as B&N.
“B&N is just another retailer trying to increase online sales but Amazon has been doing this for years and has infrastructure, logistics and systems in place to repel any assault on its dominance even if that challenge is powered by Google,” said Steven Aaron, VP at Global Sun Solutions.
“Though it might sound counter-intuitive, we think B&N’s best course of action is to cater to the significant proportion of customers who still prefer the experience of shopping for books in person. They could focus on what distinguishes it from the likes of Amazon; namely, providing those people with better physical spaces in which to browse and socialize,” Aaron added.
Because of Amazon’s relentless cost-cutting and sheer logistics power, B&N has closed 63 stores over the last 5 years as it struggles to remain relevant in what, superficially at least, appears to be an e-commerce revolution.
Global Sun Solutions said it expected the trial to fail citing the fact that Google’s Shopping Express platform doesn’t operate at a large enough scale to have any tangible effect on B&N’s bottom line.
“B&N need to play to their strengths rather than trying to play Amazon’s game, especially when they can’t win,” concluded Aaron.
