Srinagar, October 6 (Vijay Kumar) – In connection with the celebration of wildlife week long programme spread over all the three regions of Ladakh,Kashmir and Jammu to create awareness among the people particularly the youth for conservation of wildlife and their habitat, the Department of Wild Life Conservation, organized a state level function at SKICC, Srinagar.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Forest Mian Altaf Ahmad who was chief guest said that at present thrust is being laid on preservation of environment through out the world adding that it would prove fruitful when all of us would play a pivotal role to preserve and conserve forests, water bodies and environment.He appealed the people particularly the youth to make the State green and safe heaven for the rich biodiversity of the State.
The function was attended by University, school and college students, local people, NGOs, representatives of print and electronic media, officers of the concerned department conservationists, experts, naturalists and representative of police. Minister for Forest and Environment Mian Altaf Ahmed was chief guest on the occasion. Commissioner/Secretary Forest,Shantmanu and Chief Wildlife Warden, Mr. R.D. Tiwari was also present on the occasion and highlighted the importance of the Wildlife department in preservation of wildlife.

Among other distinguished guests Director Information, senior officers of forests and Wildlife, senior citizens and Chief patron of National Society for human welfare J&K(NGO) Nazir-be-Nazir also attended the function.
The Minister in his speech said that State Government has taken a series of measures for conservation of forests and the wildlife therein. He stressed for involving the people particularly youth for their active support and cooperation for conservation measures.
R.D. Tiwari in his address said that State’s biodiversity and the rich gene pool resources are a priceless treasure that needs to be conserved.
Chief Conservator Forests and, Wildlife Warden Kashmir, N.A. Kichloo highlighted the importance of wildlife conservation in the present context being important in life support system. He said besides this the conservation of wild life has immense socio- economic, ecological and bio- aesthetic importance for man kind.
As a prelude to the Wildlife Week celebrations an inter School symposium was held on the subject “ Conserve Wildlife and its habitat”. Painting competition on Wildlife conservation was also held at Hokersar in which 100 students of various schools participated.
The Minister awarded the winners of the competitions by certificates. He also presented award to Nazir- be- Nazir for his efforts of conserving wetlands.
