Paradise on Earth, dream destination — these are words that come to mind when you think Goa. But lately, the state has gained a reputation for serious crimes like murder, rape and drug trafficking. Now Remo Fernandes, who is among the state’s most popular icons, says he’s had enough and he wants to leave.
“The Goa that was paradise for me is no longer a paradise. For the first time in my life I can actually entertain the thought of migrating without finding it strange,” he said.
One of Goa’s most famous voices is now saying there is no hope for the state. Pop icon Remo Fenandes says ‘enough is enough’.
Goa is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, especially for international travellers.
But in the recent past, sun, sea and feni have turned into a lethal cocktail. The most recent scandal being the rape charges against Cabinet Minister Babush Monserrate’s son.
The minister himself is abetting the crime — the rape of a young German girl. Even the ruling Congress party’s high command admits the state’s image has taken a hit.
“We are worried about Goa’s image. These kind of events tarnish state’s image. For political reasons, you should not tarnish Goa’s image,” said B K Hariprasad, general secretary, Congress.
Angry Goans are also up in arms, fed up the rising crime graph. But the Home Minister is unfazed.
“The law and order situation is perfect. There were only one or two incidents which have been highlighted because of the media,” said Ravi Naik, Home Minister, Goa.
It was in 1983 that Remo Fernandes wrote a song titled ‘Goa, Goan, gone’. He urged his people to ‘wake up and stir up before they eat you up’.
But today, 25 years later, many believe this song is no longer relevant. They say Goa has already lost its charm and it’s soul.
