Google rolls out a monthly series for small algorithm changes

Search may be a simple process, but behind it lies a complex set of algorithms working assiduously to churn out the most apt and freshest results for a query. This integral complexity of the Google algorithm allows the search engine to masterfully palette the best results, and to be present as one of the top result is the ultimate aspiration for any web master.

The search engine monolith has ringed in many changes to its algorithm – from small tweaks to process altering changes like the Panda update. Just recently it introduced the “freshness update” – one which fine tunes algorithms to publish fresh results instead of outdated ones for a search query. Google regularly publishes blog posts, videos and forum posts about its latest algorithm changes so as to bring individuals and internet marketers into line with the changes being deployed, thereby making the search process transparent. In order to encourage more transparency in the search process, Google has rolled out a new blog series which will talk about algorithm and feature enhancements that are made almost on a daily basis. This will be a monthly series where the search engine giant will feature more elusive but apparent algorithm changes that do not necessarily need an entire blog post description. The idea behind this initiative was to broaden the scope for transparency in the search process and to build a comprehensive knowledge platform for those who like to stay tuned to the search evolution and activities associated with it.

In the first of this series, Google has published a post on algorithm changes that have occurred over the month of November, including related query refinements, comprehensive indexing (for long-tail documents), new ‘parked domain’ classifier (for automatically detecting parked domains), original content (a new signals to make better predictions about the original piece of content), live results for Major League Soccer and the Canadian Football League, image result freshness (for news queries), layout changes on tablets (minor color and layout changes to improve usability on tablets), top result selection code rewrite (to handle extra processing on the top set of results so as to not show too many results from one site alone) and flexible prediction algorithm(for certain queries only, without losing the intention of the user). The next such post will be published in January 2012.

For long Google has sought to provide its users with a knowledge platform which details out the search process, its function and the changes being brought into the search algorithm. From now on, users can expect to get a more news-like update from the search engine for finer algorithm tweaks that it rolls out. A pro-active effort on the part of Google, this initiative is indeed a welcome one, especially for web marketers who can avail these changes to create more fine-tuned search optimization strategies.
