Government vs government
The Uttar Pradesh cief mnister , Smt Mayavati, has done it again. She has alleged a threat to her life from the central government . She maintains that her sworn enemy, a don, is being protected and prompted by the central government to eliminate her .Such a sweeping charge made by somebody else could be brushed aside. She is the chief mnister of a state and she claims that her intelligence agency has proof to back her charge.
Uttar Pradesh till recently was known as ultapradesh(topsyturvey land). Things changed for the better or so people thought when the unwieldy state was pruned and Uttaranchal was formed. Mayavati’s triumph in the recent elections was borne on new understanding. She managed to make common cause with forward castes, a possibility which was considere remote, and emerged victorious. The new bond is almost breaking, say the cynics. Yet, she is safe for a few years at least and given the culture of sycophancy that is Uttar Pradesh she may even move upward to the centre of power.
Perhaps her advisors must have prodded her on and she is in no mood to wait. So she is precipitating matters by forcing an election at the centre. The centre, ruled by a coalition led by the congress is shaky. There are differences between coalition partners. Ther partner from south India ., Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK for short) is keen on Ram Sethu project. This is a sensitive issue for Hindus because they believe it has associations with Lord Ram, incarnation of God. The left parties are none too happy with the nuclear deal with United states of America. Scientists, unbiased nes, maintain that the accord would benefit the big brother more than India. Now Mayavati has threatened to pull back from the coalition ruling at the centre. She has numbers who count.
This is the first time a constituent from the state is blackmailing the centre.Several years ago, Sonia Gandhi’s husband, Rajiv, caused the downfall of a government on a flimsy pretext, that the Haryana police are dogging him. A party from Haryana .a state adjoining Delhi, was part of the ruling coalition. The support from the Congress was withdrawn and the government collapsed. His widow who is enjoying the powers and privileges far in excess of the Prime Minister may lose them if Mayavati’s threat is carried out. Shall we consider it poetic justice?
