Expressing deep shock and grief over the fatal road accident in which at least 17 persons died and 33 were at Digdool area in Ramban, CPI (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has termed administration’s ‘callousness’ responsible for the increasing number of accidents in the state.
In a statement issued here, Tarigami said that a house committee headed by him following mounting number of accidents in erstwhile Doda region and the National Highway in Jammu region had submitted a detailed report before the government but ‘unfortunately the same is gathering dust’.
“The recommendations put forth by the committee headed by me have not been implemented sofar. This is unfortunate and utter callousness on part of the state administration which owes an explanation on the latest fatal road accident,” Tarigami has said while expressing solidarity with the bereaved families.
Voicing concern over growing road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir, Tarigami who as the head of a Legislative panel which looked into the issue asked the government to come out with a report on action taken over its recommendations.
“The government should come out with a report on action taken over recommendations of a House Committee (HC) that was constituted to prepare a comprehensive report on causes and measures to bring down the number of road mishaps in the state,” Tarigami said.
He said over two years have passed since the panel submitted its report, but the government is yet to come out with its action taken report on the recommendations.
“This speaks volumes about the government’s indifferent attitude towards this serious humanitarian crisis,” he alleged. The repeated road accidents in Doda, Kistwar, Ramban and Udhampur districts, he said, must be a grave concern for the state government. “It is a situation which demands immediate measures and attention of all of us especially the officers of transport, traffic police and Border Roads Organisation to put forward their departmental specific assignment of the causes responsible for causing accidents in these hilly districts,” he added.
