Srinagar, October 09(Scoop News)- Former Deputy Chairman, Legislative Council and noted poet and literary figure, Muhammad Yousuf Taing today said the Government of Jammu and Kashmir is strongly contemplating to establish a Council for promotion of Urdu in the State.
“The Council, an autonomous body, will comprise intellectuals and literary figures, who would make concerted efforts for the promotion and spread of Urdu across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir,” M Y Taing said while addressing at the inauguration of the two-day national level seminar “Contribution of Kashmiris to Urdu Language and Literature” organized by the Department of Urdu, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) on Wednesday at University of Kashmir.
CUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdul Wahid Presided over the function, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Hamidi Kashmiri gave the keynote address, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) Director, Dr. Khwaja Muhammad Ekram-ud-Din, CUK Registrar CUK, Prof. Muhammad Afzal Zargar and Coordinator of the Urdu Department, Prof. Quddus Jawaid were present on the dais.
CUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdul Wahid in his presidential address hailed the contributions of Kashmiri poets, writers and literary personalities in enriching and promoting the Urdu language in the State. “Despite the fact that Urdu is not the mother tongue of the people in J&K, yet the language is still spoken in every nook and corner of the State,” said Prof. Abdul Wahid. He further added that keeping in view the richness of the language, the University had framed the University Tarana in Urdu only. Prof. Wahid also informed the audience about the possibility of starting active research activities in the Urdu department soon, a matter that would be taken up in the forthcoming Academic Council meeting.
Prof. Wahid said the University was currently offering courses in 11 different subjects and would in near future start programmes in Hindi and Kashmiri. He said the University will also launch new courses in Science and Technology after shifting to its permanent campus at Ganderbal soon.
Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Hamidi Kashmiri in his keynote speech traced the evolution of Urdu language in J&K and named scores of people, from Kashmir and Jammu province, who have contributed immensely towards the growth of Urdu language. He said the younger generation need to follow the path created by these literary figures.
NCPUL Director, Dr. Khwaja Muhammad Ekram-ud-Din appreciated the CUK for holding the event and asked the students to interact with the literary personalities present on the occasion. “By interacting with these personalities you will be able to learn things, which are not taught through books,” Dr. Khwaja Muhammad Ekram-ud-Din said. He further asked the CUK students to avail the e-library facilities of the NCPUL and pledged to contribute books to the Central University library soon.
CUK Registrar, Prof. Muhammad Afzal Zargar complimented the Urdu department for conducting the national level seminar and said the University would hold more such events in near future. He also emphasized upon all the participants of the seminar to discuss every contours of the seminar theme and make it one of the most memorable events for all.
Prof. Quddus Jawaid, Coordinator, Urdu Department welcomed the guests while as seminar Coordinator, Dr. Pervez Ahmad Azmi introduced the theme of the seminar.
Earlier, the dignitaries released two books Iqbal Ke Tassavur-e-Niswan and Urdu Shayari Mein Kashmir Ke Manzar Kashi written by the teachers of the Urdu department of CUK, Dr. Nusrat Jabeen and Dr. Ashiq Chowdhary respectively. Departmental magazine, Sham Bazm e Adab was also released on the occasion.
