Jammu, January 19(Scoop News) –The non-seriousness of the state government about increasing number of road accidents in the state is reflected in the shocking disclosure about the manner in which the Legislative House Panel report on the issue has been gathering dust for the past over nine months while road traffic accidents continue un-abated. This was alleged here today by National Executive Member & Chief Spokesperson Dr. Jitendra Singh.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the NC-Congress coalition government owes to explain to the people of the state the reason for not following up the recommendations of the multi member multi-party house committee headed by Mohd. Yousuf Tarigami even though at the time of constituting the panel a great urgency about the issue was expressed unanimously by all legislators across the party lines. He further asked what prevented the state government from constituting a “Traffic Regulatory Authority” for bringing in more accountability in regulation and management of vehicular traffic in the state.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that it is a matter of shame that the number of deaths occurring as a result of road accidents in the preceding year have been more than the number of militancy related deaths. He said that while on the one hand no serious thought has been given towards increasing the strength of traffic personnel as recommended by the House Panel, on the other hand the available strength of traffic personnel is largely occupied with regulation of VIP traffic.
Dr. Jitendra Singh suggested among other things proper maintenance of hill roads, installation of CCTV cameras and traffic police posts at sensitive points, mechanical upkeep of public transport vehicles plying on long routes and strict check on overloading and over speeding.
