Srinagar, January 19, (Scoop News)- Noted trade union leader and social activist, Muntazir Mohuidin Sunday joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The party president Mehbooba Mufti welcomed Mr Mohuidin into the party fold along with his hundreds of workers during an impressive gathering at her Gupkar residence.
Speaking on the occasion she said change in the political and governance system is a must to see the people of Jammu and Kashmir out of prevailing distress and hard times they have battled over the last five years and the PDP has evolved as a best alternate before them to rewrite a new history for the state.
Mehbooba said it was an encouraging trend that people from different walks of life are joining the party in good numbers, which is the clear, loud indication of acceptability of the party’s vision, for the political resolution and good governance, among the people. She exhorted the hope that joining of Mr Mohuidin into PDP will help in making the party strong on the ground and it was equally heartening to see people reposing faith in the democratic system to see end of their sufferings.
Taking dig at the coalition government, she said it is now talking of commitments and instead of giving an account of its performance for six years, it is making fresh promises. “The government is making fresh promises to the people besides knowing that it has not been able deliver on a single promise made to the people in 2008, she said. She said after failing to secure a deal on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) over the years, the government is saying it is now its ‘life’s mission’ to revoke the controversial act from the state. She said the government is promising uninterrupted power supply in the future but it has dismantled the entire system.
“It has been now almost three years when the panchayat elections happened in the state, and after making mockery of the system it is now, the government is pledging to empower them at the end of its tenure,” she said adding establishment of new administration units is a well thought out political gimmick at a time when NC has badly failed to get anything positive, from Autonomy to free power to cheap gas for the people. She said the NC leadership has lost the plot and ability to think about the issues facing the state. “On pitiful power scenario and poor infrastructure in the state, the NC has not only to answer about the last six years, but about the 40 years it had ruled here,” said Mehbooba.
Mehbooba said J&K is going through a difficult phase and the present government instead of making a positive impact on the ground, has held everything hostage to its inefficiency and ineptness to deliver. With the result, she said, the common man is suffering for basic amenities like power, water, ration etc. and exhorted the hope that people will now ensure that a new system, based on equality and justice, shall find its place to take the state forward on modern line.
Mehbooba said the PDP during its brief tenure in the government delivered on both political and economical fronts and put in place a structure that changed the public perception that things can’t be changed in the state. She said it was seriousness of the leadership into play to write some historical decisions, like opening of the LoC between India and Pakistan, the ceasefire on the borders or the opening of the Mughal road to connect the Pirpanchal region with the Valley, which realized a positive environment on the ground.
The PDP chief said the government has miserably failed on every front and there is virtually governance crisis prevailing in the state, which has also been responsible for the disenchantment among the people. Blaming the NC-led government of patronizing the corruption in the state, she said the institutions of decency in public life have been brazenly eroded to make it easy for the ruling party politicians to resort to corrupt practices with all impunity.
On the occasion, the senior party leader, Tariq Hameed Karra, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjoora, Aga Syed Mehmood, district president, Saifudin Bhat; Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Ghulam Mohammad Kumar, Shahnawaz Mir and others were present.
