Srinagar, June 04 – Reiterating his Government’s commitment to dig out the truth in the Shopian incident, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thuresday said that Nilofar and Asiya were like his sisters and he, as brother, feels the pain of the tragedy that has befallen the victim family. He said he will not rest till he finds the truth behind their mysterious death.
“I won’t permit anybody to suppress the truth under any circumstances and if any official is found wanting, exemplary punishment would be given to him. I feel the pain which will only be removed once we find out the truth”, Mr. Abdullah said.
Urging political parties not to politicize the human tragedy which involves the death of two innocent women, the Chief Minister said he was as eager as anybody else to know the truth and find out what exactly led to their death. “I also have three sisters of the same age and am eager to know the truth so that justice is delivered to the victim family”, he said.
The Chief Minister said that a judicial enquiry has been ordered and every thing possible will be done to bring out the truth behind the death of the women.
The Chief Minister clarified that there is no difference between a Commission of Inquiry being headed by a retired or a sitting judge of the High Court. He said he preferred probe by a retired judge since for appointing a sitting judge of the High Court, sanction of the Supreme Court had to be sought. “SC sanction would have taken at least two months to arrive and delayed the institution of the Commission, which I wanted to avoid at any cost”, the Chief Minister said, adding the Commission of Inquiry has been provided the staff it had asked for.
The Chief Minister appealed the youth not to fall prey to the machinations of vested interests who provoke them to take law into their own hands. He said these elements snatch the livelihood of poor people and deal a severe blow to the economy of the valley. He said the aeroplanes that arrived here full with tourists are now coming empty. People related with tourism trade are hard hit, he said, hoping that better sense would prevail on those who instigate youth to pelt stones and enforce shutdowns.
