Grand Canyon University students should avoid travel to Mexico during spring and summer break

Grand Canyon University students should avoid travel to Mexico during spring and summer break.

There has been a dramatic increase in drug cartel violence and criminal activity in Mexico, especially in popular tourist destinations frequented by high school and college students from America.

Bars, discos and nightclubs in resortcities like Acapulco, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Tijuana can be havens for drug dealers, criminals and organized crime…

In some cases these groups and individuals are targeting college students visiting Mexico on Spring Break…

As such Grand Canyon University students in Phoenix, Arizona should avoid travel to Mexico and consider other destinations for Spring Break this year.

It’s common knowledge that one of the most powerful drug gangs in Mexico is based in the state of Sinaloa, where Mazatlan is located, and the capital city, Culiacan, has the second-highest murder rate in the country.

Despite this fact Mazatlan remains a popular destination for many high school and college students from across America.

For Mazatlan, the U.S. State Department specifically noted in its May 6, 2010, travel advisory: “the city of Mazatlan has experienced a recent increase in violent crime, with more murders in the first quarter of 2010 than in all of 2009.

U.S. citizens and college students in particular should defer unnecessary travel to Culiacan and exercise extreme caution when visiting or traveling in Mexico….

The best advice is to avoid travel to Mexico altogether.
