It is doubly disturbing to many that some Malacanang officials are distributing money to some politicians as a means of keeping them silent on the issue of impeachment against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The Catholic Beishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has expressed disbelief over this matter, knowing how far it could impact on the people’s confidence on the national leadership, whose image is slowly being tarnished from left and right. Perhaps, the issue of bribe money is the last ultimatum that they could muster if only to convince some oppositionists to withdraw their support for the impending case against the president.
And now the CBCP is asking who is behind this money distribution scheme? Most of all, the CBCP is appalled to know that even the priest-turned governor in Pampanga province had been bribed for at least a half a million pesos. Gov. Panlilio explained that he could not tell a lie because he is a priest. And it seemed to be true. Now, he is pointing an accusing finger to the Palace for masterminding the scheme. But the big question is where did this enormous amount of money came from? Did it come from the jueteng lords in the province, as a means of their support to the embattled leadership? Nobody knows. Maybe.
At this point, the people have to stay on the sideline and wait until the final call for the impeachment proceedings starts. And that if at least a required votes from the congressmen are collected, before it could finally be deliberated on the Senate floors.
