At least seventeen soldiers and an unknown number of soldiers were killed during an attack on pro-Taliban militant, Maulana Fazlullah on Thursday, October 25. It said that the there were notes on the guards’ bodies saying that they were American agents. The Swat area has been one of numerous areas on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where the pro-Taliban militants have been getting a stronger control in the past few months.
Fazlullah’s spokesman, Sirajuddin said that these attacks were executed by commoners who support the group because they only want enforcement by the means of Islamic laws. It is reported that Fazlullah used radio broadcast to call forth jihad against the Pakistani government.
In response, security forces dropped leaflets Saturday. The leaflets urged the residents to get rid of extremism and terrorism from the Swat valley.
According to reports, the civilians that were decapitated by the militants were dragged out of a minibus. Associated Press received testimony from a local saying that the notes read: “It is the fate of an American agent. Whoever works for America will face the same fate.”
The brutal executions happen to be part of retaliation of the security forces storming into the Red Mosque in Islamabad. That incident left more than one-hundred people dead as a result. The Red Mosque is also occupied by Islamic extremists.
