Back to Guwahati and on to Kokrajhar by road along the north bank of the Brahmaputra. Drive along some of the Assam’s most lush green woods. One either side of the road, rows upon rows of sal trees and sleepy little hamlets flash by. About 6 km from Kokrajhar is a forest bungalow at Haltugaon. Guwahati, all round it is a forest teeming with wildlife. If you are a nature lover, there is tarry a while at the nearby Golpara Dak Bungalow and take in the many game reserves within easy motor able distance. Fishing is freely allowed here.
A quick air hop Guwahati brings you to the head –quarters of Assam’s Cachar district, Silchar. The overland route takes you through Meghalaya, while the train tends to be rather draw-out and at times none too comfortable. About 19 km from Silchar is the famous shrine at Bhuban Hill. The last few kilometers have to be done on foot over a tortuous hill pass. Situated here is the temple of Shiva and Parvati. Neaby is the Mahiharan Suranga, a tunnel said to have been used by lord Krishna. The Triveni, a small river running by this tunnel, is believed to have the waters of the Ganga flowing with it.
About 3 km from Jowai is the Thadlaskein Lake. The atmosphere here is tranquil and the rowing relaxing. Nartiang, 24 km away, is a valley famous for its ancient Hindu monoliths.
