On May 13, 2014 Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby provided the following readout of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel’s Meeting with Saudi Vice Minister of Defense Salman bin Sultan :
“Upon his arrival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel met with Saudi Vice Minister of Defense Salman bin Sultan. The secretary last saw the vice minister at the Pentagon in March.
Secretary Hagel expressed his appreciation for Saudi leaders hosting the U.S.-GCC Strategic Defense Dialogue, the first meeting of its kind since 2008.
The leaders discussed regional threats and challenges including Iran and Syria and the importance of maintaining close cooperation on these and other issues in the region.
Secretary Hagel emphasized the long-standing and enduring U.S. – Saudi defense partnership and U.S. commitment to stability and security in the region” (source: Congressional Record http://www.defense.gov/Releases/Release.aspx?ReleaseID=16700).
Note: I admit I am no fan of Saudi Arabia, and have in the past advocated that we as a nation end formal diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia for supporting and financing terrorism around the world.
The Wahhabi-Salafi ideology gives religious legitimacy, religious incentive and religious justification to the atrocities and also to the suicide bombings which are taking place both in Iraq and in Syria. Saudi funding supports terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan and other countries around the world.
Despite this the US supports the evil regime and lavished substantial military aid on that country. Sadly this is just another example of the failed foreign and military policy in the United States.
