WARNING: THIS ARTICLE SPOILS THE MOVIE HANCOCK. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN THE MOVIE, STOP READING NOW.
Hancock, the new special effects heavy superhero movie starring Will Smith, raked in over $100 million during its first week in theaters. Although critics gave the film overall negative reviews, moviegoers flocked to theaters curious about the numerous plot twists in what some say is the "anti-hero" movie of the summer.
The fact that Smith’s character in Hancock is an anti-hero (drunk, lazy, rude), mixed with the film’s plot twists, makes it as enjoyable as any of the recent superhero special effects spectaculars.
If you are curious about the plot twists but don’t want to shell out $10 to see the film, here comes the spoiler: Smith is one of the last remaining people with superpowers whose mission on Earth is to protect humans. As they say in the movie, he is a god. But Smith doesn’t know this because he lost all memory of his life 80 years ago (oh yeah, he is immortal and has been alive for thousands of years). The person who does know his history and identity is the only other remaining superhero/god, played by Charlize Theron. Unlike Smith, Theron keeps her super powers secret. She is reunited with Smith and able to tell him about his identity when her husband becomes his PR agent. The closer Theron and Smith become (Smith falls in love with her), the less power they have. At the end, after almost being defeated, Smith and Theron decide to stay away from each other, Smith as a superhero and Theron as a wife and mother.
Well that’s the spoiler and the twist. It is still worth it to see Hancock for the marvelous special effects but hopefully this has quelled some of your curiosity.
