Over the years, there has been many stories circulating around the globe about spectres and spirits that walk the halls of Britain’s “Tower of London” in the dead of night. One of the reason’s why, is simply because over the past 1000 plus years, The Tower of London has more than seen its share of murders, executions, tortures and poisonings. It’s no wonder that some of these spirits would decide to stay on and relive their dying moments.
One of the best known spirits in the Tower of London is that of Anne Boleyn, who lost her head on Tower Green. She is said to carry her head under her arm on the eve of an execution or death, dressed in a silky dress and white ruff. There have been many witnesses who claim that they have seen her including a sergeant serving with the Artist’s Rifles. Anne has also been repeatedly seen in the Tower’s Chapel.
Another well known story takes place on February 12, 1957, when a guardsman came face to face with one of the ghostly residents at the foot of the Salt Tower. Nearly 3 AM when something struck the roof of a sentry box he was sheltering in. Upon stepping out, he looked up to see what it was and before him stood a shapeless white spirit staring back at him from the roof top. An interesting fact about this happening is that it happened on the same date in 1554, that Lady Jane Grey was beheaded on Tower Green, which interestingly enough lies less than 200 yards away from the Salt Tower.
