The seriousness of this disorder is that many people don’t really acknowledge their problem until it’s so severe that one’s behavior has become unpredictable and irrational. Like Andrea Yates who drowned all 5 of her children after she too was later diagnosed with a serious form of post-partum depression and now as a result of that she will be serving a life sentence without parole. What is mysterious about depression is that it’s a gateway disease to other types of mental illnesses like schizophrenia-onset and paranoid, bipolar disorder, and disassociative personality disorder. More awareness needs to be brought to this disorder because it’s one of the most misdiagnosed diseases and it needs to be researched further to bring the diagnosis to where it needs to be and that new cases are properly diagnosed so that you lessen the rate of suicides and other outbursts and that the individuals who suffer this can get the treatment they need to live with their condition and have some control over managing their symptoms and not letting it interrupt their everyday lives.
Havin’ the blues-the lowdown on depression
Depression is one of the most misdiagnosed mental conditions around. According to many doctors this type of problem is usually onset during one’s teen years and progressively gets worse. Statistics show that around 19 million people including 1 out of 4 women are suffering from some form of depression. Women are the most prone when they have children since it’s categorized as post-partum depression and actress Brooke Shields went public with her struggle with this form of depression which was highly criticized by actor Tom Cruise because she treated her depression with prescription anti-depressants. This seems to be a huge problem across the board with the fact that almost 93% of those undiagnosed don’t associate their depression with a psychological disorder where 44% of those undiagnosed who refused treatment with a mental health professional feel that their condition can be self-managed.
Roper Starch Worldwide conducted a survey and the findings showed that 18% of American age adults have met the diagnostic criteria for depression at the clinical or some kind of generalized anxiety disorder. The stigmatization of having a proper diagnosis is only showing a staggering 42% of those with a formal diagnosis by a psychiatrist and that only 2 out of 5 people that have a formal diagnosis. This problem is so readily ignored that many people are walking around untreated and are basically like time bombs ready to go off because a person who is depressed can also be unpredictable which leads to many people to commit or attempt suicide and it then that a depressed person’s loved one discover the truth about their condition. Oprah did a show on depression and had actress Lorraine Bracco, Emme Aronson-the first plus-size supermodel was on discussing her husband’s depression, and audience members sharing their experience in dealing with depression in all forms.
