Between the talks between President Joseph Kabila and President George W. Bush, the military situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be a major topic between the talks of both political leaders. Asides from visiting the White House, Kabila plans to visit a major United States mining company based in Arizona. To the United States, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a very important ally in Africa.
According to United States officials, they would discuss reforming the security sector in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kabila’s forces have already been deployed around positions to take on dissident general Laurent Nkunda. So far, it is said that Nkunda refuses to integrate his best soldiers into a national army. In another report, Nkunda has agreed to send five-hundred of his men into an integration station.
Kabila has given his troops the okay towards preparing for disarming Nkunda’s men. However, the government troops have not launched a main attack on Nkunda’s forces, yet.
Asides from the situation with General Nkunda, President Kabila will talk to business leaders who are drawn towards the country’s mineral resources. He will be talking to the copper mining company, Phelps Dodge during the trip.
In the near future, it would look as if economically and militarily, the United States will play a major role in the future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
