Approximately 3:30 p.m., Monday December 17, 2007 with many news and police helicopters hovering over the pursuit. All traffic lanes on the West bound 60 freeway were clear. The sounds of police sirens blaring in the air and all manner of spectators overlooking the scene from the Lorena Street overpass. There was a heavy sense of excitement in the air as the suspect vehicle came into view.
The suspect vehicle had passed under the Lorena Street overpass and had stopped briefly. There it sat for a brief amount time what seemed like an eternity. There was a sense that the police were about to open fire. And I heard the muffled sounds of something but then I knew it was only the suspect vehicle’s doors shut. For whatever reason the driver and passenger of the olive green pick up truck opened the cab doors. And it was at that precise point when I hoped for a birdseye view of the conclusion of the pursuit that the suspect vehicle bolted headed due West with fifteen police, and CHP squad cars in hot pursuit.
The muffled noises that I thought were gun shots convinced me that a damatic end of the pursuit was going to occur there and that it would be bloody and brutal. With such an outcome it is certain that bystanders would be caught in the crossfire even of ricocheting rounds.
