Historic moment-Meira Kumar,elected the First Woman Speaker of Indian Parliament

History was Created on Wednesday in India when The 64-year-old dalit leader Meira Kumar was was unanimously elected Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha.

The five-time MP and former diplomat is the first woman to become the Speaker in India‘s Parliamentary history.  

Meira Kumar was elected after a resolution moved by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and seconded by Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee was approved by a voice vote amidst thumping of desks by the entire House.

Fourteen more resolutions including the one moved by the Opposition leader L K Advani were moved proposing her name. She was then elected unopposed through voice vote. The Pro-Tem Speaker, Manikrao Gavit then declared that she was the new Speaker and requested her to occupy the Chair. Following this, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, accompanied by Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and Mr. Advani, then immediately congratulated Mrs. Kumar and later escorted her to the Chair. Felicitating her, the Prime Minister described the occasion as historic saying that a woman has become Speaker for the first time.

Prime Minister,Dr Singh also complimented her for the enormous contributions she made during her 25 years long political career. He expressed the hope that with her experience, she will be able to discharge her duties and offered full cooperation in the conduct of the House.

Dr Singh said that he salutes her and the womanhood of the country for making significant contributions to the lives of the people.
Pranab Mukherjee he Leader of the House said that it would be the collective effort of all to create a new tradition where issues could be discussed and debated in an obstruction free atmosphere.

The Leader of the Opposition Mr. L.K. Advani expressed the confidence that Ms. Meira Kumar will be able to successfully carryout the responsibilities as the Speaker. He also assured her their cooperation for the smooth conduct of the House.

The new speaker Meira Kumar has said that she will endeavour to carry out the responsibilities bestowed on her. Thanking the members for electing her unanimously for the Speaker’s post, Mrs Meira Kumar assured the House that she will try to live up to their expectations while maintaining the dignity of the House.
