Holidays in a Recession

They’re coming, quicker than ever, quicker than we like, but they’re coming.

The Holidays.

Whatever you celebrate (and you probably do), you’re beginning to think about gifts.  And budgets.

If you’re like me, you’ve always had to consider holiday spending.  But have you ever had a year this tight?

Here are some suggestions from a chronically strapped holiday gift giver:

1.                  Make a list.  This sounds like a no-brainer, but if you make all of your gift-giving decisions BEFORE you go shopping, you can compare prices and do all of your shopping on one day.  Also you are less likely to fall prey to impulse purchases greater than or outside your budget.  I make a point NOT to shop before I have decided on everything.

2.                  Shop online.  Many retailers will offer free shipping and many will also have discounted prices (especially booksellers) compared to in-store.  Also, since the airlines are now charging for luggage, you can have your gifts shipped directly to your destination and wrap when you arrive.  You save on shipping, postage if you were to send them yourself, luggage charges, and angst.  The angst is especially important this time of year.

3.                  Make it yourself.  Do you knit? Crochet? Cook? Draw? Write?  I know, I know, some people don’t appreciate handmade gifts, but if you put thought and skill into them, they can really work.  Remember: time is a precious gift to give to your loved ones.  I cannot reveal my handmade gift plans here, as my readership includes family, but I would keep them all if I could!  Caveat:  If you have given a handmade gift to someone before and they were less than impressed, buy them something.  And remember, it’s “handmade” not “homemade.”

4.                  Online Auctions:  We’ve all had our experience with eBay I’m sure, but bargains can definitely be found here.  New and used video games and consoles are everywhere, electronic equipment, antiques and collectibles abound.  Make sure you check the list price for your item (if there is one) to make sure that you’re getting a deal.  And the list helps here, too.  If you want something specific, take a look.  You might get a great deal!

5.                  Donate to charities in the name of your gift recipients.  A lot of us have people that don’t need or want anything but they are active in their communities.  Make a donation in their name to a cause that is important to them.  Also charities such as food banks and such are really suffering this year due to lower giving and higher need.  Even if you can’t give a lot, it will be greatly appreciated by your recipient and the people that are helped by it.

In a year like this, an economy like this, it is important to remember that the greatest gift we can give is love.  Hugs and smiles are free to give, but priceless to receive.  Happy Thanksgiving!
