Senior Malawian civil servants will this week go home dispappointed.Government has issued a circular reversing the current performance related contracts scheme to pensionable terms.
In the circular ,goverment says civil servants who were on contract should revert to permanent pensionable terms reversing the 2000 circular which put Principal Secretaries and their deputies, Directors and their deputies on contract.
Those on contract were getting more than three times their counterparts who were not on contract.
The circular has pleased junior civil servants who didnot enjoy the benefits of being on contract.
Principal Secretaries were getting more than 2,143 American dollars per month while deputy directors were 1,215 American dollars.A person one grade lower than a deputy director who was not on contract was getting 393 American dollars.
It is these discrepancies that has pleased most civil servants to have the contracts cancelled.
