How did you or your country celebrated New Years Eve? Did you go out to the streets and malls for celebration? Hongkongers had a merry time on the 1 December, holding extravaganzas throughout Hong Kong and celebrating the coming of Beijing Olympics.
With the boost of economy, people are more willing to spend money to have a nice meal with their friends on that night. Even some ten-thousand-dollar set dinners were fully booked. The crowd enjoyed themselves in Lan Kuai Fong and did the countdown with an exhilarating mood. With the coming of 2008, someone wished to earn more money from the stock market, someone wished for health, some students wished for better results.
A party was held at Tin Shui Wai, a New Town built by the government to ease the land use conflict in the old areas such as Yau Ma Tei and to provide a self-contained and more comfortable place for people to work and live in. However, the effect was not significant. People living in there are impoverished and they are feeling neglected and sad. With the stunning incident of a mother carrying her daughter jumping down from their home and committed suicide, the government and people are figuring what they could do to help them. People living in Tin Shui Wai (some of them) were able to be celebrating New Year in Tsim Sha Tsui, where they could see gorgeous fireworks. They feel being cared for more and a party was also held in Tin Shui Wai so the people living there wouldn’t need to travel a lot and pay extra money for traveling, bringing happiness to them.
Hongkongers are feeling satisfaction with the city’s development. But people are not so happy with the problem of universal suffrage. China has announced no universal suffrage for Hong Kong in 2012, which they had said they would consider it when it is year 2003. Now when people are seeking the approval of China for 2012 universal suffrage, China said it could happen, earliest in 2017.
Despite these social problems concerning the citizens, we enjoyed a happy night and is looking forward to the Beijing Olympics, when Hong Kong is holding the horse racing competitions.
Having given the opportunity let me say ‘ Happy New Year’ to you all!
