In the New Year, Major Debbie Aylett will be sent to the front line in. Her son, twenty-two year Tom is already serving in Afghanistan. Tom is a marine in 40 commando. Militarily, Debbie Aylett is senior in rank to her son.
“I’ve already told him to call me ma’am and not num,” Debbie Aylett explains. She did add that it was bizarre.
Aylett also adds: “I never thought I would be in the same theatre of war as Tom but it will be good.”
She will be the first mother to join her son on the battlefield.
“I have mixed feelings about going but I do want to do what I have been training for although I am slightly apprehensive as I haven’t done a tour of duty before,” she adds. Debbie Aylett is a mother of two.
She had volunteered to serve for three months in Afghanistan. Currently, she is a ward sister at Queen Alexandra Hospital’s cardiac department. Major Aylett will fly out on January 11, 2008. She will help run 243 Field hospital at the Helmand province.
Debbie Aylett finishes with: “I have to be realistic about the risk of Tom getting hurt. I cannot guarantee it will not happen because that is the sort of chance he takes in his job.
“But I would rather be out there if anything happens to him. At least me and my colleagues can use all our medical skills to help him.”
She has been in the TA for eight years. Tom who is her oldest son joined the Royal Marines four years ago. Currently, he is on his second tour of the country.
