In Hyderabad Thousands of applicants of the Rajiv Swagruha scheme may not get houses until to 2011. Unable to find land the houses, the government is hinting at returning the money deposited by applicants.
The scheme was designed to provide houses to the middle-class living in the city’s and towns. The plan was to build the two lakh flats and individual residential buildings costing 25 per cent less than the market price.
The government had collected 3000 rupees from each applicant in March 2007. The scheme created much enthusiasm among the middle classes. However, the government realised later that it could be no cope with the unprecedented demand.
The cost of construction too shot up by almost 40 per cent. Going ahead with the scheme would be have burdened the exchequer.
