I live in a beautiful predominately African American/Caribbean neighborhood in Brooklyn. It’s beautiful because there is a real sense of community here. I lived in this community for about 30 years.
Within the past 8 years I’ve seen such a negative decline in the overall moral of the neighborhood. There are so many issues that should and need to be addressed. More and more people in my community are finding themselves in need of food. It’s no longer homeless people asking for help but people who have jobs and look just like me. With the increase of rent prices, food and general costs of living, even the average person with a job still can’t make enough to support their famlies.
Healthcare is another important issue. There are so many people in my community without healthcare. I know of people who could get healthcare through their employer but they opt out because the cut they would have to take to their paycheck would be to great. I was surprised to find out that even small business owners in my community don’t have health insurance.
That’s why this election is so important…for the first time in my lifetime there is someone who wants to lead this country on a whole and has not forgotten about the little people who need help. This election will be very exciting for my community as people who have never voted in their whole lives will make there way to the polls.
