Screen Size – 14.1” and 15.4” (you can go for latter if you want to have a rich experience for your videos, movies, games, etc. Though, it will be a few grams (100 or so) bulkier and a few hundred rupees costlier)
DVD Writer, WebCam, Bluetooth – comes with most (if not all) of the models..
Color Choice – your own, doesn’t really matter..
Brands – HP, Compaq, DELL, Acer, Toshiba, Gateway, Vaio, Samsung, IBM, Lenovo
Cost Difference –
HP and Compaq have same stable, but HP caters to a higher class of people (at least this is what there pricing strategy suggests). The same configuration with a bit of inferior (if you want to use that word) looks will be available in compaq for around 2-4K lesser than HP.
Similar is the case with Lenovo and IBM (you will get better cost effective deals in IBM rather than in Lenovo. Agin, its your decision on how do yuo percieve the brand and how much are you willing to shell out extra (just) for that brand.)
DELL is standard – you can’t do much, however, you can customize the models the way you want and buy whatever you want to..
Acer again will be cost effective, but i’m not sure of its performance vis a vis HP or Lenovo or DELL.
Toshiba and Gateway will (or may) lead you into trouble due to the fact that they hardly have their service centres across India (HP, DELL, Lenovo, Compaq, IBM would have).
Samsung is also better than a few others in some of the features but it lacks good repo and good service records..
Vaio is again for the luxury, probably the most expensive of all.. not for me at least.. but again, its your wish..
Conclusion – So, all in all, HP, Lenovo and DELL will have one range of cost (with similar models differing by not more than INR 1000). In look and feel, its all personal.. I don’t find any significant difference between them..
Next in the hierarchy come Compaq, Samsung/IBM, Acer with Compaq having the best look and feel factor and Acer the least.
Then come Toshiba and Gateway (due to less or no availability of service centres) and ofcourse Vaio sits on top of all of them (feel good factor enhancer, i would say..)
And one more thing, Lenovo has not that good sound output as compared to HP or Compaq, as they come with Atlec Lansing speakers (almost all models), so if you want your laptop to have the volume which should wake your neighbors up from deep sleep.. go for HP or compaq..
