The immigration pledge by Senator Jeff Sessions R-Alabama is an effort to defeat the McCain-Kennedy proposal currently on the floor in the United States Senate. Last week in Birmingham, Huckabee said he was almost ready to sign that pledge. But, Huckabee said he was on the fence on one of the pledge’s issues.
Huckabee explained that it had to do with the 13th and 15th point pledge. It had to do with the elimination of the visa lottery program and the changing of the current preference categories that guarantee automatic entry for aging parents and extended family where it would be replaced with a system that would both fairly and objectively evaluate at least 50 percent of all those that apply. It would be based on education, skills, ability to speak English, and age.
He said that he was not sure if the ratio for immigrants with advanced degrees was enough for the changing needs.
“Everything else about it is…absolutely fantastic,” he said. He added: “That’s the one piece we haven’t been able to completely work on. Hopefully we can get with Senator Sessions to get that verified.”
Later in Tuscaloosa, Huckabee made the announcement that he would sign the pledge by Sessions. When asked about that decision, Huckabee answered: “Point 13 dealt with ratios of people in engineering—we looked at that and decided it really is not a big issue and certainly not something that ought to keep us from signing it. It’s very consistent with our 9-point immigration plan so I thought, what better time to do it than when I’m in Alabama.”
