Amongst the list of organizations stepping in to support the Jena 6, the "Human Rights Campaign" known for addressing the issues of the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered) community has decided to join in. Like the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) that represents the GLBT community has joined in giving their support of the Jena 6. It is slightly surprising as the incident doesn’t have anything to do with the GLBT community. One could possibly ask why the Human Rights Campaign decided to take action in Jena 6. But to the HRC, it doesn’t matter if you’re straight or gay.
Prejudice is prejudice is the stance.
Advocate.com explains in a recent published exclusive that it’s important for the GLBT community gets involved and stand up for the Jena 6. The article explains the role of the GLBT community in Jena Six is that it’s still an ongoing struggle for justice and equal treatment for all Americans. In a sense, their involvement is something that transcends skin color, religious faith, and sexual preferences. That is one way of understanding the GLBT community’s let alone HRC’s current involvement with Jena Six.
Further explanation of the current involvement includes that it’s not a showdown between African-Americans and white authority in Jena, Louisiana. It’s explained in the exclusive that it’s mainly about how certain members of American society are mistreated and subjected to prejudice and bias along with the denial of fair and equal treatment in the court of law. But it’s an interesting take on viewing the Jena 6 incident in a new light. Before the HRC gave its support to the Jena 6, it looked to be "Black vs. White." But it’s doesn’t seem to be the case anymore as the HRC and other GLBT communities have found an interest in Jena Six.
As a result, the exclusive from Advocate.com further adds that the Human Rights Campaign will be in Jena, Louisiana. They plan to stand with both the NAACP and the ACLU to solidify their stance on supporting the Jena Six and calling for equal treatment. It doesn’t look to be the typical Black vs. White standoff. This looks to be a union between Black, White, Straight, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered in hopes they can stand together.
HRC’s choice to get involved shows that Jena Six shouldn’t be overlooked nor be discarded at all. Its involvement definitely shows that Jena Six is making waves through the GLBT community. Perhaps in the near future other advocacy groups may be involved and consider it much more than the typical "Black vs. White." It may be a good start to looking at all incidents beyond the color of skin, difference in religion, sexual preferences, and so forth.
