The Israeli border blokade has wornsened the situation in Gaza and if urgent measures were not taken to ease the blokage, it is feared that Gaza would plunge into a humanitiarian crisis arising out of lack of power and widespread shortages of drugs and other essential supplies.
Despite repeated assurances by the Israeli PrimeMinister, Mr.Ehmud Olmert that Israel would not cause a humanitarian crisis, yet this is what exactly is happnening in the border. Gaza’s main powr plant was shut down last Sunday affecing a wide population across the spectrum consequent to the fuel shortage. This is inspit e of the fact that it provides only 30% of Gaza’s power requirement, but, the effect is more severe because of the complicated way the power grid system works.
If there is no petrol, there is no work. Consequently, the population woke up to a desrted city with shops closed and streets free of tracfic. There was a chronic shortage of medicines and hospitals could not perform operations due to lack of power. The medicines would last barely for one or two days more and the wounded would remain untreated.
Finally, the israeli blocakde of U.N. shipments of food and other humanitarian supplies, if not lifted, would plunge Gaza into a humanitarian crisis resulting in people dying out of hunger.
