If you have not started preparing for Irene start now, don’t hesitate whether she will make landfall, or whether she will make it near you. With the time that is left before the storm hits, prepare yourself now.
Remember, if you are already prepared for Irene , check on your neighbors and family see if they need help with anything. Irene could mimic the path of Hurricane Gloria in 1985, a Category 3 storm that hit North Carolina’s Outer Banks and then slammed into New York’s Long Island and curved through New England, causing $900 million of damage.
Virginia doesn’t need more disaster after the earthquake, but Irene is not waiting around for anyone to be ready, she’s coming prepared or not. Irene will be the first hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Ike pounded Texas in 2008.

There also a tornado warning for Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and the Carolina’s. There’s hardly any excuse for people not to know that there’s a hurricane out there. The hurricane is set to slam into North Carolina early Saturday before roaring toward New York City, accompanied by an extremely dangerous storm surge that could raise water levels by as much as 11 feet. If you have a car and live in a low lying area, park it on a hill. Haiti wasn’t in the storm, but another 1,000 people were displaced by flooding caused by Irene, officials said, leading to fears of a new outbreak of cholera. The water-borne disease killed some 5,000 people in Haiti in the wake of last year’s major earthquake.
Hurricane watches and warnings were in effect along the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to New Jersey. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York declared emergencies for Irene. New York City residents in low-lying areas should voluntarily start moving out on Friday, before Hurricane Irene is expected to hit the city’s mass transit system might have to be shut down on Saturday, making it difficult for residents to leave if they wait.
Don’t second guess whether Irene will make landfall, it’s better to be safe then sorry later.
They are saying some won’t leave from their area, and they are just going to wait it out, however with this hurricane only moving 14 miles per hour and being 300 miles wide, waiting it out is something you really shouldn’t do.
