Husband cruelty to wife in Lagos
By Emmanuel Udom
Henry Nnadi is a laundry man in Lagos. But, he is presently passing through tumultuous times. Police detectives have accused him of attempting to kill his wife, Mercy. The story line, I must say sounds barbaric, cruel, inhuman and devilish.
After reading the piece in some local newspapers in Lagos, Nigeria, I came out with the impressions that Henry, who allowed his hot tempered nature, suspicion and drunken nature to over rule his head in this case may most likely not escape jail term.
I am not a judge and therefore should not pronounce verdict, even before the police finishes their investigations and charge the case to court.
There, I stand to be corrected and even blasted here. But, how on earth should a man arrive home at midnight dead drunk and uses his laundry iron, plucked in a socket to batter the wife, so to say.
Henry is telling the police that the wife has been having sexual intercourse with his aged father. The wife has denied this angle of the story, saying that when she got married to the man in 2010, she thought she married a gentleman, not knowing that he is a drunkard, hot tempered and highly suspicious.
There is nothing basically wrong in drinking beer. But, like every other things in life, moderation should be our watchword in all our thoughts, words and deeds.
Wife battering in common in most African countries, where some men regard themselves as next to God. These men think their wives and girlfriends are not partners in progress, but tools, puppets, servants and minors. A man needs a woman and woman, a man to make the world go round.
The likes of Henry should reflect on this, even as he is presently being drilled by police detectives.
The poor woman, when our reporter visited her recently at a private hospital in Okota, Lagos, the doctors are saying that she need immediate assistance, as she was inflicted with a 3rd degree burnt by no to her person than her husband.
It is only some of her friends, neighbors and relative that is trying to look for money to offset some of her medical bill, which the doctor said is not getting close to N300, 000. May heavens help her.
