Ice Bucket Challenge is an activity that dares the participants to take the challenge of dumping a bucket full of ice water on their heads. They dump the bucket full on ice cold chilling water on their heads and then dare someone else to do so. It is done with a view to raise funds for people affected with ALS also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis that affects the nerve cells and spinal cord. The video of this activity was made viral on social sharing spaces and it has created a powerful impact on every viewer resulting to the collection of more than 23$ million. A large number of videos recording more than 1.2 million were shared on social networking spaces like Facebook and Twitter.
The Origin
The origin of the challenging idea of Ice Bucket activity was initiated with the sole intention of raising funds for charity. During the year 2013-2014 in the northern hemisphere an unknown cold water challenge had gone viral which became highly popular in social media. Initially the idea was to collect funds for cancer research. Another version of this popular activity had taken place in New Zealand on July 7th, 2014. Participants took this unknown cold water challenge to donate to the Auckland Division of Cancer Society. Thus the origin of this unknown cold water challenge is traced in different parts across the globe but the origin of ice bucket challenge is referred to the video in which Pete Frates, basketball player of US and an ALS patient took this challenge. Frates disclosed the fact that he got this idea from one of his friends.
People who took Ice Bucket Challenge
The ice water activity or rather a challenge had become widely popular owing to the sharing of videos in social networking sites. It created a buzz in the United Kingdom and many famous celebrities took this challenging activity. Ethel Kennedy challenged US President Barack Obama. He had contributed a donation of $100 to this campaign. Celebrities like Justin Bieber, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Satya Nadella etc took this challenge. The participants who have been challenged must record their video in continuous footage. They must confirm the acceptance of the challenge and then pour the bucket full of ice on their heads. The participant can dare someone else as well. If the participant pours the bucket of ice water he has to donate 10$ else have to donate 100$. This has laid to the increase in the collection of funds and donations for the ALS association.
