What is Atlantic Yards? Atlantic Yards is a combination sports arena for the NBA professional team the Nets, commercial and residential space. This is in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. (In New York City, "borough" is the name given to the various counties that comprise it). Atlantic Yards is being developed by Forest City Ratner, a real estate developer headed by Bruce Ratner, a self-styled "progressive" from a family of such progressives. His brother is Michael Ratner and his sister is Ellen Ratner.
Residential and commercial properties in the "footprint" have been been condemned under the eminent domain laws by the Empire State Development Corporation, an agency of the State of New York. Taxpayer funding is involved and an effort has been made to direct some of the Obama stimulus funds to the project. The project faces legal opposition from Develop, Don’t Destroy Brooklyn www.dddb.org and has run into financial difficulties in the current economic crisis.
However, if may some day be built. If it does, I pledge to:
A) Not rent or buy commercial or residential space
B) Not attend any games at the arena, sometimes called the Brooklyn Nets Arena.
C) Boycott the commercial tenants there.
New York City voters can choose the Libertarian Party slate of candidates citywide and in Brooklyn who oppose Atlantic Yards and eminent domain abuse in general. Joseph Dobrian for Mayor, John Clifton for Comptroller and James Lesczynski for Public Advocate. See http://manhattanlp.org/elections/.
