Consequent to the landmark judgment by the Supreme Court of India, upholding 27 % reservation for the OBCs sans the creamy layer, in the higher educational institutions, expeditious steps are being taken by the IITs and IIMs in India to implement the quota for OBCs from the current academic year itself..The Central Government has also announced the implementation of the quota for OBCs in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
IITs in India have already begun their admission process. JEE has been conducted. The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of all seven IITs have met in New Delhi along with representatives of IT-BHU and Indian Institute of Mines, Dhanbad for seriously considering the implementation of the 27 % quota for OBCs in the admission process. However, since the Supreme Court has given the deadline for implementing the 27 % quota for OBCs by 2010, the JAB for IITs has decided to allot 9 % quota for OBCs for the current academic year and the remaining percentage of quota by the year 2010.However, the newly started three IITs in Bihar, Rajasthan and Andhrapradesh, which are expected to function from the current academic year, 2008-2009, will implement the full quota of 27 % for OBCs in the current academic year itself.
As to the cut-off mark for the admission in the IITs, there will be 10 % differential between General category and OBCs. The OBC students and their annual income for deciding the creamy layer etc will be identified as per the details furnished by them in their application.
Two merit lists one meant for the General category and another one meant for the OBCs will be prepared by the JAB.In the course of the counseling, the creamy layer will be identified and will be excluded from the OBC admission list.
