An interesting amendment is on the anvil, under active consideration and debate in the Indian Parliament.
Hon’ble Minister Mrs.Renuka Choudry is trying hard and very anxious to push forward her bill seeking an important amendment in the parliament on the Immoral trafficking of Women’s Act.What Renuka Choudry is trying to introduce is that men who are searching for prostitutes and engage them should be made criminals and a minimum punishment of atleast seven years should be awarded to them as punishment. The CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat seems to be supporting her views.
But some congress I ministers like Kabil Sibal, who is a legal expert and a luminary, Dr.Anbumani and others have got their own reservations over the bill and they sought to introduce it in a varied form. There idea is to legalise the prostitution in over 400 red light areas across in India, including Sonaghat in Kolkatta and in Mumbai.
There idea is not only to legalise prostitution and also make prostitutes responsible citizens as was the case in some western countries, allowing women to choose prostitution as a profession according to their will and pleasure, even making them pay income tax.Besides, it is their opinion that if prostitution has become more stringent and a punishable offence, it will lead to secret prostitution.
The idea of Kapil Sibal and Dr.Anbumani seemed to bail out the male partners who seek prostitutes and our health minister in particular has not thought about the highest incidence of HIV in India as it is in African countries.
