Despite of having nine rounds of discussion of the UPA-Left committee, the political crisis over the Indo-US nuclear deal entered a decisive phase on Wednesday but both the parties depart without arriving at a decision and so the stalemate over the nuclear issue continues.
The next meeting between the parties is expected in July which will decide the fate of the deal and possibility of early Lok Sabha polls.
The crucial UPA-Left meeting failed to break the nuclear impasse, but gave both sides some more time to avert a direct showdown and thereby a crisis. The meeting which lasted for 90 minutes, wound up the UPA-Left committee formed last year on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
By forcing the government to wind up the committee, the left parties put the ball clearly in the Congress court. With no option left to buy more time , the Congress has to take a political gamble on the deal. If Congress is bent on clinching the Indo-US nuclear deal, it has to ensure the support of the MPs of SP party to thrive on since BSP has already withdrew support to the UPA.As far as Left parties are concerned they are steadfast in their stand..If the UPA government goes through the deal, the communists will withdraw their support .
After the UPA-Left meeting, the Prime Minister Mr.Manmohan Singh and the party president Ms.Sonia Gandhi reviewed the situation and discussed the deadlock with the cabinet colleagues like Pranab Mukerji, A.K.Antony and others.
Sources close to the UPA disclosed that UPA is not ready for an early election. While the Left parties are unequivocally oppose the treaty, the UPA may proceed as scheduled to the Group of Eight summit in Tokyo and instead depute Mr.Pranab Mukerjee to represent India there.
