Impunity for Journalist killers is source of irritation for Pakistan’s Journalist community

Two recent incidents of violence have become sources of irritation for Journalist community in Pakistan. A journalist Saleem Shehzad was murdered in Islamabad capital of Pakistan and a 20 years old nephew of a journalist was murdered by rangers in Karachi capital of Sindh Pakistan.

All the six rangers involved in murder of young boy in Karachi are arrested; Chief Justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court had taken notice of the violent incident. Murderers of Saleem Shehzad are not yet arrested by police. Normally murderers of Journalists in Pakistan enjoy impunity, and are seldom punished for their crimes against Journalists. Though Journalists are human beings and are also citizens of Pakistan.

Both these incidents were source of a great pleasure for corrupt element in society, an SDO of WAPDA had proudly said that good number of journalists are killed and beaten up this year in Pakistan. Now attacks on Journalists have become so rapid and are launched in such an organized manner that the moment a Journalist breaks the news is either killed or are beaten up in Pakistan.

Increase in incidents of violence against Journalists indicates growing strength of corrupt and dictatorial elements in Pakistan’s society. Exemplary punishments for such elements will definitely make the Journalists secure in Pakistan and will certainly help to make Pakistan a better place to live in.
