As was expected, a backlash has started in favor of Tata Nano Project after declaration of closure of work by Tata authority. In a severe counter development today the 3rd September’08, a farmer, Kishen Santra of Jaymolla village of Singur itself committed suicide to protest closure of Tata plant in which his three sons were working. He gave his land to Tata Motors for industrialization and hoped that his sons would be absorbed in the plant on permanent basis once the factory started working.
Infuriated by the suicide, the villagers of Jaymolla who gave considerable lands to Tata, came out in large numbers and blocked roads in Singur demanding opening of Tata project again. They also issued ultimatum to Mamata Banerjee to leave Singur within 24 hours along with outsiders.
In the afternoon, in another similar demonstration villagers of Ratanpur assembled at the crossing of Durgapur expressway and blocked it demanding opening of Tata plant and chanting anti Mamata slogans. An imminent showdown with supporters of TMC (Mamata’s Party) was somehow averted by police.
Elsewhere in Calcutta, IT workers and professionals in Sector V of salt lake city came out in large numbers to support Tata cause and demanded to throw out Mamata from Bengal terming her mad and insane politician.
A three member team of IT professionals went to meet Mamata in Singur were rebuffed by Mamata herself calling them touts of CPI(M) and Tata. The delegation having one women member was furious over the behavior of Mamata and told the press that they were threatened with dire consequences if they do not leave immediately. Madan Mitra, a TMC leader threatened with raised fist saying the delegation to leave Singur at the count of 1 to 3
A procession in favor of industrialization and to protest against behavior of Mamata has been organized today in the afternoon by these professionals including common man in salt lake with blackclothes tied over faces depicting a blackday for Bengal.
Local TV Channels are beaming a sort of a running commentary on the new developments in Calcutta and Singur today.
Now a few words about Santra. His two elder sons earned Rs.110/- each per day and the youngest one Rs.80/- per day by working as contract labour at Tata plant. Santra got Rs.300000/- (USD 7500) as compensation from his 1500square meter land he gave to the Tata factory. He replaced his mud house by a brick house for the family from the compensation. He also married off his two younger sons also with the money.
